Literary Evidences of Iron Age
The Aryans of Early Vedic Period had no knowledge of iron.The word " Ayas" Used in Rig Veda about which some scholars thought that this was Iron Metal.But this is the fact that this word "Ayas" has used in general meaning of metal, not specific meaning of Iron Metal.
The Aryans of Later Vedic Period had knowledge of "Iron".In text of this period two words " Lohit Ayas" and "Krisha Ayas" has been found. The Lohit Ayas is used in the sense of "Copper Metal" and Krisha Ayas is used in the sense of "Iron Metal".
Krishna Yajur Veda speaks of 6,12,and 24 oxin yoked to the plough.Scholars estimate that such plough of heavy weight and ploughshare will have made from Iron.
In " Atharva Veda" the clear cut mention of ploughshare made of Iron.
In "Sahatapata Brahamana" the relation of Iron is established with Peasentary class.
The heating and cooling of ploughshare is described in "Buddhist Script".
On the basis of this evidences it can be said that tthe used of Iron tools in agriculture was began around " 800 B. C. to 700 B. C. in India.
